Solitary individuals of this species grow in a cylindrical form, with an erect stem that reaches around 24 inches (61 centimeters) in height, and 3 to 4 inches (7.6 to 10.16 centimeters) in diameter. The stem of Mammillaria polythele ranges in color from dark green to blue green.
