About Mammillaria candida Scheidw.

Mammillaria candida Scheidw. is a cactus that starts out green and globe-shaped, becoming nearly cylindrical as it ages. Mature plants can reach about 15 centimeters (5.9 inches) in diameter and around 30 centimeters (12 inches) in height. Like other members of the genus Mammillaria, this species does not have ribs. The entire plant is covered in fine white hair. It produces short, very numerous spines that are usually snow white or brown, and its flowers can be either pink or white. This species is native to Mexico, where it occurs in the states of Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, and Tamaulipas. Its natural habitat is desert, and it grows in thickets of xerophytic shrubs on calcareous soils, at altitudes between 500 and 2,500 metres (1,600 and 8,200 ft) above sea level.
