This species, scientifically named Malpolon monspessulanus (Hermann, 1804), can reach a maximum length of 2.55 metres (8 feet) and a maximum weight of 2 kilograms (4 pounds). It is very common across Spain, Portugal, and Northwest Africa. It can also be found along the southern Mediterranean coast of France and in the western regions of the Middle East. Its specific epithet monspessulanus is the Latinized form of Montpellier, a city located in southern France.
