About Malacothamnus fremontii (A.Gray) Greene

Malacothamnus fremontii (A.Gray) Greene is a species of flowering plant in the mallow family. The species contains two varieties; one of these varieties is sometimes treated as the separate species Malacothamnus helleri. This plant has two accepted common names: unfurled bushmallow, named because its corollas stay unfurled after flowering, and Frémont's bushmallow, named after John C. Frémont. Unfurled bushmallow is the recommended common name for people who prefer not to honor Frémont, who led multiple massacres against Indigenous peoples. Malacothamnus fremontii is endemic to northern California, found in and west of the Sierra Nevada.
