Maja squinado (Herbst, 1788), commonly called the European spider crab, spiny spider crab, or spinous spider crab, is a migratory crab species found in the Mediterranean Sea. It has a similar appearance to the much larger Japanese spider crab, but the two species belong to different crab families: Maja squinado is part of the family Majidae, while the Japanese spider crab belongs to Macrocheiridae.
