About Magicicada tredecim (Riley, 1868)

Like other species in the genus Magicicada, Magicicada tredecim has reddish eyes and reddish wing veins. Its dorsal thorax is black. The underside of M. tredecim's abdomen is light orange or caramel colored, and it lacks the dark bands found on M. neotredecim and M. septendecim. Magicicada species are found across the southeastern United States. M. tredecim was the first described of the four Magicicada species that have a 13-year lifecycle. It has been recorded in all three currently existing 13-year cicada broods: Brood XIX, Brood XXII, and Brood XXIII. The median total life cycle of M. tredecim, from egg to natural adult death, is around thirteen years. Individual life cycles can range from nine years to seventeen years.
