About Magicicada tredecassini Alexander & Moore, 1962

Magicicada tredecassini Alexander & Moore, 1962 is a species of periodical cicada that is endemic to the United States. This species has a 13-year lifecycle, and is otherwise indistinguishable from Magicicada cassini, the 17-year periodical cicada. The two species are typically discussed together under the shared names "cassini periodical cicadas" or "cassini-type periodical cicadas." Unlike other periodical cicadas, males of the cassini-type may synchronize their courting behavior, allowing tens of thousands of males to sing and fly in unison. The median life cycle of Magicicada tredecassini, from egg to natural adult death, is around thirteen years. However, the length of its life cycle can range from nine years to seventeen years.
