About Macularia sylvatica (Draparnaud, 1801)
Macularia sylvatica is generally similar in appearance to Cepaea nemoralis, but its shell is smaller, less colourful, and less variable in pattern. The spire of its shell is blunt. The most distinct characteristic of this species is the formation of its shell colour bands: at least the upper two bands appear interrupted. This is a west-Alpine species that occurs in Germany, Italy, France, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland. Its vertical range spans from 265 m to 2560 m above sea level. It occupies similar habitats to C. nemoralis, including woods, dunes, and grassland, but M. sylvatica tolerates wetter and colder mountain environments.
