Mature caterpillars of this species can grow to a length of approximately 80 millimetres (3.1 in). Young caterpillars are black with bright yellow or orange markings along their segments; as caterpillars mature, they darken in overall color. All developmental stages of the caterpillar are covered in blackish and tawny-colored hairs, with light grey hairs along their sides.
