About Macrothelypteris torresiana (Gaudich.) Ching

Macrothelypteris torresiana (Gaudich.) Ching is a fern species native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia. It has been introduced to other regions, including extensive areas of North America and South America. This species is placed in different genera depending on the taxonomic classification of the fern family Thelypteridaceae. If the entire Thelypteridaceae family is classified under the genus Thelypteris, this species is named Thelypteris torresiana. However, molecular research indicates a close relationship between a group of species sometimes classified in Macrothelypteris, Phegopteris, and related genera. As a result, it is now common to remove this species from the genus Thelypteris and classify it as Macrothelypteris torresiana. This fern contains flavonoids that have been studied for potential medicinal uses.
