About Macrosaccus morrisella (Fitch, 1859)

Macrosaccus morrisella, commonly known as the hog peanut moth, is a moth species belonging to the family Gracillariidae. In North America, its distribution ranges from Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec in the north, south and west to Texas and Colorado. This species has a wingspan of 6 to 7 mm. The larvae of Macrosaccus morrisella feed on three plant species: Amphicarpaea bracteata, Strophostyles leiosperma, and soybean, Glycine max. Larvae create mines inside the leaves of their host plants. The mine starts as an elongated serpentine track on the underside of the leaflet. It later expands into an elongated-oval, whitish blotch that eventually becomes strongly tentiform.
