About Macronyx aurantiigula Reichenow, 1891
Pangani longclaw (Macronyx aurantiigula Reichenow, 1891) measures around 20 cm (8 in) in length. As its species name indicates, it has a yellow-orange throat, which is bordered by a black necklace. Its upperparts are mottled in various shades of brown, its belly is yellow, and its flanks are streaked with black and buff. In immature individuals, the belly is buff rather than yellow, and the dark breast band is less distinct. This bird has jerky flight. Its call is described as a high-pitched siuuweeeee, with a pitch that rises, falls, then rises again before fading away. The more orange throat of this species distinguishes it from the yellow-throated longclaw and the Abyssinian longclaw; however, the throats of female and older immature Pangani longclaws can be more yellow. The Abyssinian longclaw is also found further north, in Ethiopia in the Horn of Africa. The Pangani longclaw is a predominantly ground-dwelling bird that lives in grasslands at altitudes up to 1800 m (5500 ft).
