About Macroglossum trochilus Hübner

Macroglossum trochilus, commonly called the African hummingbird hawk-moth, is a moth species that belongs to the family Sphingidae. This species was first formally described by Jacob Hübner in 1823. It is very common across most habitat types in southern and eastern Africa, as well as in the Comoro Islands. Adult individuals are frequently observed feeding or visiting flowers during full daylight sunshine. The forewings of this moth measure between 15 and 18 millimetres in length. When the pupa of Macroglossum trochilus is disturbed or potentially threatened, its tail will move.
