About Macroglossum sitiene Walker, 1856

Macroglossum sitiene Walker, 1856 has a wingspan of 46–56 mm. Its thorax is olive green. Forewings have no reddish tinge; the antemedial band is filled with black and recurved along the inner margin. The first two postmedial lines are more angled below the costa. A strongly developed black subapical streak and spot is present on the terminal segment of the abdomen. A yellow band is visible on the hindwings. The ventral side has three transverse lines on each hindwing. The larva is polymorphic, with both green and brown forms. Its horn is long and slightly curved upwards. The head and thorax of the pupa are dull greenish grey, and the remainder of the body is brownish grey. This species is distributed in Sri Lanka, eastern India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, southern China, Taiwan, southern Japan (the Ryukyu Archipelago), Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra, Indonesia. In ecology, adult Macroglossum sitiene are attracted to the blossoms of Duranta erecta and Lantana camara. They prefer flowers located low down on bushes, and fly very close to the ground when approaching these flowers. Larvae have been recorded feeding on Paederia scandens in Hong Kong, Morinda umbellata and Paederia tomentosa in more northern areas of China, and mainly on Morinda citridora in Thailand.
