About Machimus setibarbus (Loew, 1849)

Machimus setibarbus is a species of robber fly that can reach a body length of approximately 16–27 millimetres, or 0.63–1.06 inches. Individuals of this species have a face beard with distinctly stout bristles, and four to eight scutellar marginal bristles. Their legs are entirely black, although the knees are sometimes paler in color. In addition, the front femur do not have distinctively stout bristles on their ventral side, and only bear hairs. This species is widespread across Europe, where it has been recorded in Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Croatia, Germany, Finland, Greece, Italy, former Yugoslavia, Norway, Russia, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Czech Republic, and Slovakia. It is also found in North Africa (Tunisia) and the Near East (Israel).
