About Machilus thunbergii Siebold & Zucc.
Machilus thunbergii (synonym Persea thunbergii), commonly called the Japanese bay tree, red machilus, or tabunoki, is a widespread flowering plant species belonging to the family Lauraceae. It is native to Vietnam, Taiwan, southeast China, north-central China, the Korean Peninsula, and Japan. This is a sturdy evergreen tree that typically grows 10 to 15 meters (30 to 50 feet) tall, and can reach up to 20 meters (70 feet) in height. It is used for timber and planted as a street tree. Its bark is the source of makko, a powder used to produce mosquito-repelling incense. It prefers coastal habitats and can tolerate saline soil.
