About Macaria liturata (Clerck, 1759)
Macaria liturata (Clerck, 1759) has a wingspan of 22–27 mm, with forewings measuring 11–13 mm in length. All wings have a purple-grey base colour. The forewings feature three dark crossbars, which are thicker at the front edge and often break into scattered points. Behind the outermost cross line, a broad reddish-yellow transverse band is visible; this band starts as a brownish-red patch at the forewing front edge and extends onto the hindwings. The forewings are slightly notched just below the apex, while the hindwings have a short small projection at their middle. This species is distributed from the British Isles through Siberia to the Russian Far East and Japan. In the southern and western Mediterranean, it occurs in Italy, the Balkans, the Black Sea region, and the Caucasus. In the north, its range extends above the Arctic Circle. In the Alps, it can be found at elevations up to around 1600 metres above sea level. The nominate subspecies occurs in the West Palearctic, while the subspecies Macaria liturata pressaria is found in the East Palearctic.
