About Lysiosquilla maculata (Fabricius, 1793)

Lysiosquilla maculata (Fabricius, 1793), also referred to as Lysiosquillina maculata, is commonly known by the common names zebra mantis shrimp, striped mantis shrimp, or razor mantis. This is a species of mantis shrimp that is distributed across the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from East Africa to the Galápagos and Hawaiian Islands. This species can reach a maximum length of 40 cm, making it the largest mantis shrimp in the world. It can be distinguished from its congener L. sulcata by two key characteristics: L. maculata has a greater number of teeth on the last segment of its raptorial claw, and the distal half of its uropodal endopod is dark, a colouration not seen in L. sulcata. There is a small artisanal fishery that harvests this species.
