About Lyperanthus suaveolens R.Br.

Lyperanthus suaveolens is a tuberous perennial herb that grows 18–44 cm (7–20 in) tall. It produces 2 to 8 yellowish brown, brown, or dark reddish brown flowers between August and November. Each flower is approximately 3 cm (1 in) wide, and the flowers are sometimes fragrant when the weather is warm. The plant produces a single leathery leaf that is linear to lance-shaped. This leaf measures 12–26 cm (5–10 in) long and up to 1.2 cm (0.5 in) wide, with a dark upper surface and a pale lower surface. This species is found growing in woodland habitats in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania. Like other Australian terrestrial orchids, this species is not widely known in cultivation. Successful cultivation has been achieved by growing the plant in a shadehouse covered with 50-70% shadecloth.
