About Lyncornis macrotis (Vigors, 1831)

The great eared nightjar, scientific name Lyncornis macrotis (Vigors, 1831), is the largest nightjar species in its family by length, which ranges from 31 to 41 cm (12 to 16 in). On average, males weigh 131 g (4.6 oz) and females weigh an average of 151 g (5.3 oz). This makes the great eared nightjar the second heaviest species in its family, after the nacunda nighthawk. The species has grey-brown plumage with mottled, streaked, and stripey patterning. It has pointed wings, a long tail, and a short, wide beak that can open to approximately 120 degrees. The great eared nightjar is distributed across South Asia and Southeast Asia, with populations present in the Western Ghats, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Southwest China, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitat is subtropical or moist lowland tropical forests.
