About Lycoperdon mammiforme Pers.

Lycoperdon mammiforme Pers. is a rare, inedible species of puffball mushroom belonging to the genus Lycoperdon. It grows on chalk soil in deciduous forests, and is found in Europe. Its fruit bodies range in shape from spherical to pear-shaped. Young fruit bodies are pure white, with a slightly grainy inner skin and an outer skin that breaks apart into flakes which are quickly shed. As it matures, the fruit body becomes ochre in color, turning chocolate-brown when it is old. It can grow up to 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter.
