About Lycia ursaria (Walker, 1860)

Lycia ursaria is a moth species belonging to the family Geometridae, commonly known by the common names stout spanworm moth and bear. This species was first formally described by Francis Walker in 1860. Its distribution covers southern Canada and the northern United States, ranging south as far as New Jersey and Iowa. The wingspan of adult Lycia ursaria measures approximately 45 millimeters. Adults of this species have one generation per year, and are active in flight from March through June each year. The larvae of Lycia ursaria feed on the leaves of a wide variety of broadleaved trees and shrubs, including species from the genera Alnus, Malus, Fraxinus, Tilia, Betula, Vaccinium, Cornus, Ulmus, Crataegus, Populus and Salix.
