About Luxilus cerasinus (Cope, 1868)
The crescent shiner, with the scientific name Luxilus cerasinus originally described by Cope in 1868, is a freshwater ray-finned fish species in the family Leuciscidae, a group that includes shiners, daces, and minnows. This fish is found in the James, Roanoke, Chowan, and New River drainages, as well as the extreme upper Cape Fear River drainage, located within Virginia and North Carolina. It prefers to live in rocky or sandy pools and runs in headwaters, creeks, and small rivers.
