The white shiner, with the scientific name Luxilus albeolus (Jordan, 1889), is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish. It is classified in the family Leuciscidae, which includes shiners, daces, and minnows. This fish is found on the Atlantic Slope, ranging from the Chowan River system in Virginia to the Cape Fear River drainage in North Carolina, and also occurs in the upper New River drainage spanning West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina. It prefers to live in rocky and sandy pools and runs in headwaters, creeks, and small rivers.
