About Ludwigia glandulosa Walter

Ludwigia glandulosa Walter is a perennial herbaceous forb. It reaches a maximum height of around 40 cm (which equals 1 foot 6 inches; one source notes a maximum height of 1 foot 3 inches). When grown with abundant light, this plant develops a red to purple color; under insufficient light, its color fades to green. A sign of poor growth in this species is shedding of lower leaves, which occurs before the whole plant dies. It requires water with a pH between approximately 6 and 7.5, warm temperatures, and high light levels to survive. It does not grow easily in most environments, but benefits greatly from any amount of phosphates and nitrates in its environment. Observations of 14 swamp plant species in flooded and non-flooded areas found that Ludwigia glandulosa does not germinate in flooded conditions. This species occurs in wetland areas and roadside ditches across most of the southern states of North America. It is classified as a threatened species in Indiana and an endangered species in Maryland. When protections are put in place for this wetland species, they may be limited to the wetland itself and a surrounding buffer area. Special precautions beyond the standard 100-foot buffer may be required to protect the plants from invasive species and human activity. Guidance from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources must be obtained before any disturbance occurs in the area. Studies examining how climate relates to species regeneration are used to understand the potential impacts of climate change on the future distribution of natural ecosystems, and other studies have been conducted to gather information on how plants' regenerative responses change as landscapes alter the environment.
