About Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann, 1830)

Lucilia cuprina, previously classified as Phaenicia cuprina and commonly called the Australian sheep blowfly, is a species of blow fly belonging to the family Calliphoridae. This species causes the livestock condition known as "sheep strike". Female Australian sheep blowflies seek out sheep that have suitable conditions for egg-laying, such as an open wound or a buildup of faeces or urine trapped in the wool, and lay their eggs in these areas. When the eggs hatch, the resulting larvae create large lesions on the sheep, and these lesions can be fatal to the animal.
