About Lucilia caesar (Linnaeus, 1758)

Lucilia caesar (Linnaeus, 1758) is a species of blow fly belonging to the family Calliphoridae. It is commonly called the common greenbottle, though this name is also often used for Lucilia sericata. Adult L. caesar typically feed on flower pollen and nectar, while its larvae feed mainly on carrion. This species is predominantly found in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Several factors are required to induce diapause in L. caesar: environmental conditions, desiccation, aeration, exposure to low temperatures, and access to a reliable food source for developing larvae. In 2019, maggots of this species were found causing myiasis in a wild boar in Italy.
