About Loxosceles simillima Lawrence, 1927
Loxosceles simillima Lawrence, 1927 is a species of spider belonging to the family Sicariidae. It is widespread across southern Africa, and its common name is the northern violin spider. Confirmed distribution of this species includes Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. Within South Africa, it has been recorded from six provinces, and occurs in more than 14 protected areas at altitudes between 83 and 1816 meters above sea level. These spiders are ground-dwelling and do not bind themselves to webs; they only spin a small number of irregular silk strands that they use as retreats. Individuals have been collected from under rocks, logs, and bark, inside termite mounds, within leaf litter, in caves, and in buildings. This species can be found in the Grassland, Nama Karoo, and Savanna biomes.
