About Lottia scutum (Rathke, 1833)
Lottia scutum is a species of plate limpet. Individuals of this species can grow up to 60 millimetres in length, and have a broad, flat shell. The shell’s apex is positioned near the front end of the shell. The anterior slope of the shell is smooth, convex, and marked with faint, inconspicuous riblets. The shell’s colour ranges from grey to tan, and is patterned with whitish spots and rays. This species can be distinguished from other related species by the golden brown colour of its cephalic tentacles on its head. Lottia scutum is distributed along the Pacific coast of North America, ranging from the Bering Sea south to Point Conception, California.
