About Lottia persona (Rathke, 1833)
Lottia persona is a large, moderately tall limpet that can grow up to 50 millimeters in length. The apex of its shell is not positioned centrally, instead lying about one third of the way along the shell's length. The shell is dark olive-green with fine white markings and has fine radial ribs, though these ribs are often smoothed down by erosion. The anterior slope of the shell is either straight or slightly concave. This species occurs along the Pacific coast of North America, ranging from Alaska to central California. Lottia persona is a cryptic species that is common in the high and mid-intertidal zones of sheltered rocky coasts. It is most often found in crevices, caves, and beneath overhangs. It is nocturnal, and grazes on micro-algae when rocks are wet.
