About Lorius lory (Linnaeus, 1758)
The black-capped lory, with the scientific name Lorius lory (Linnaeus, 1758), is also called the western black-capped lory or tricolored lory. It is a species of parrot that lives in New Guinea and the smaller islands adjacent to New Guinea. This is a colourful, relatively robust lory that measures 31 cm (12 in) long. Seven subspecies of this lory are recognized, and all of them share the same core physical traits: green wings, red heads and red body around the wings, a black cap, a grey-black cere, yellow underwings, and blue legs and belly. Most subspecies also have a blue nape and blue mantle, the area between the wings on the upper back. The species as a whole remains widespread and common across its range. However, one subspecies, Lorius lory cyanuchen, is relatively rare, with fewer than 5,000 individuals left.
