About Lophocampa caryae Harris, 1841

Lophocampa caryae, commonly known as the hickory tiger moth, hickory tussock moth, or hickory halisidota, is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae and the tribe Arctiini (the tiger moths). This species is widely distributed across the eastern half of North America. For other species in this family, caterpillars obtain chemical defenses from their host plants, making them potentially toxic or unpalatable to other organisms. While there are anecdotal claims that this species is venomous, no venom has been isolated or identified from it so far. Any adverse reactions to this species are classified as irritant contact dermatitis. This moth species produces one generation per year.
