About Lonchura pallida (Wallace, 1864)
The pale-headed munia, scientifically named Lonchura pallida (Wallace, 1864), is a species of estrildid finch found in eastern Indonesia and Timor-Leste. It inhabits artificial landscapes, subtropical and tropical lowlands, dry shrub, and grassland habitats. The species' natural range includes central and south Sulawesi, Kalaotoa, Madu, and the Lesser Sundas. Its abundance varies across locations: it is locally common in northern Flores, uncommon on Sumba, and common in grasslands and croplands on Lombok. On Sulawesi, its population appears to be expanding due to land clearance and farming. The pale-headed munia was only recently added to the official list of resident birds on Timor, where it is generally assumed to be indigenous, and may have gone undetected during previous official surveys. It was first formally recorded on Timor in 1998. While previous records listed Lombok as the species' westernmost limit, it has apparently recently crossed the Wallace Line, and is now present in numbers on Nusa Penida, a small island just off Bali. The species was omitted from a 2008 local bird checklist, and it does not appear in other recent Bali-area bird guides. The timeline and mechanism of this apparent colonization remain unclear, though an individual was photographed on Nusa Penida in March 2019, and multiple flocks have been photographed on the island from at least 2023 onwards.
