About Lomelosia caucasica (M.Bieb.) Greuter & Burdet
Lomelosia caucasica, commonly called the Caucasian pincushion flower, pincushion-flower or Caucasian scabious, is a species of flowering plant in the family Caprifoliaceae. It is native to the Caucasus, north eastern Turkey, and northern Iran. This clump-forming perennial grows 60 cm (24 in) tall and wide, and produces grey-green, divided leaves. Pincushion-shaped buds grow on erect, hairy stems. These buds open into pale blue or lavender flower heads that measure 4–8 cm (2–3 in) in diameter, and flowering occurs from late summer through to autumn. Before 1985, this species was classified as Scabiosa caucasica, when it was reclassified to Lomelosia caucasica. Some sources still continue to list this species under the older name Scabiosa caucasica. In its ecology, this plant is highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.
