About Lomaria discolor (G.Forst.) Willd.

Lomaria discolor (G.Forst.) Willd., also known by the synonym Blechnum discolor, is commonly called crown fern, and its Māori name is piupiu. It is a fern species belonging to the family Blechnaceae. This species is endemic to New Zealand. As documented by C. Michael Hogan, it occurs in multiple forest communities across various locations within New Zealand, and it sometimes forms a dominant component of the forest understorey. Lomaria discolor produces its spores on specialized fronds, which grow more upright and have a dark, shrivelled appearance.
