About Littoraria scabra (Linnaeus, 1758)
Adult shells of Littoraria scabra measure between 15 mm and 40 mm. These shells have an ovate-conical shape and lack an umbilicus. The outer shell surface features spiral sculpture with no nodules, and a pattern of irregular dark stripes. Like other bark-living snail species, this snail has a brown shell. The shell aperture is rounded, and its radula is quite long, an adaptation to fit the surface of bark.
This species is distributed across the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, where it occurs along Aldabra, Chagos, South Africa, Kenya, Madagascar, the Mascarene Basin, Mauritius, Mozambique, the Seychelles and Tanzania. It is also found in the Pacific Ocean along Hawaii and New Zealand. These snails inhabit rocky shores and mangroves.
