About Littoraria angulifera (Lamarck, 1822)
This species, with the scientific name Littoraria angulifera (Lamarck, 1822), has a maximum recorded shell length of 41 mm. Its shell typically has six whorls. The large first whorl makes up half the total length of the snail. Shell color ranges across slaty-brown, reddish brown, orange, dull yellow, and off white. The smaller whorls have white spots near their edges, plus darker streaks that fuse together on the largest whorl. This species is distributed in the Caribbean Sea and the western Atlantic Ocean, ranging from Florida south to Brazil. It is also found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean between Senegal and Angola. It primarily lives above sea level on the branches and prop roots of the red mangrove Rhizophora mangle. In traditional medicine of Northeast Brazil, Littoraria angulifera is used as a zootherapeutic product to treat chesty cough and shortness of breath.
