About Litiulus alaskanus (Cook, 1905)

Litiulus is a monotypic genus of millipedes belonging to the order Julida, with its only recognized species being Litiulus alaskanus (Cook, 1905). This millipede feeds primarily on the fruiting bodies of fungi, and occasionally feeds on species of slime molds. It thrives in northeastern Pacific old growth rainforests. It may be uniquely hardier than other millipede species that share its range, with the ability to endure harsher, drier climates. The range of Litiulus alaskanus extends from Tlingit territory at its northern end to Haida territory at its southern end. This species lives in northeastern Pacific coastal evergreen rainforests, and flourishes in wet, hypermaritime forested ecosystems that support abundant fungal growth.
