About Lithophragma heterophyllum (Hook. & Arn.) Torr. & A.Gray
Lithophragma heterophyllum, commonly called the hillside woodland star, is a flowering plant species belonging to the saxifrage family, and it occurs in the western United States. It is native to the coastal mountain ranges of California, where it typically grows in shady habitats. This plant is a rhizomatous perennial herb that grows erect or leans, producing a slender, leafless flowering stem. Its leaves grow along the lower section of the stem, and each leaf is divided into rounded lobes. The stem holds between 3 and 12 flowers. Each flower sits within a cuplike calyx made up of red or green sepals. It has five white petals that reach up to 1.2 centimeters in length, and these petals are usually divided into approximately three pointed lobes.
