About Lithobates onca (Cope, 1875)

This species, the relict leopard frog, has the scientific name Lithobates onca (Cope, 1875). Its vocalizations are described as a "low rumbling 'snore'". Adult individuals reach a length between 4.4 and 8.4 cm (1.7 to 3.3 inches). They have a narrow, brown body marked with darker spots, and a beige-colored streak running along the upper lip. Relict leopard frogs are primarily nocturnal. Historically, this species ranged along the Colorado River in extreme northwestern Arizona, adjacent Nevada, and southwestern Utah. Today, as its common name suggests, the species' current range is restricted to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Nevada. It is considered extirpated from Arizona and Utah. Its natural habitat consists of freshwater springs and their outlets.
