About Lissotriton graecus (Wolterstorff, 1906)

Lissotriton graecus can be distinguished from other species within the smooth newt species complex primarily by male secondary sexual characteristics that appear during the breeding season. In breeding males of this species, the dorsal crest is less than 1 millimetre high and has smooth edges. The belly of Lissotriton graecus has numerous small spots, while the lower tail fin is typically unspotted. Well-developed dorso-lateral folds give the species' body a square shape, and toe flaps on the hind feet are well developed.
