About Liparus glabrirostris Küster, 1849

Commonly called the butterbur weevil, Liparus glabrirostris Küster, 1849 is one of the largest weevil species found in Europe. Adult butterbur weevils reach an approximate length of 14–19 mm, or 0.55–0.75 inches. Their bodies are deep black, with irregular patches of light brown spots across the abdomen and thorax. Fainter, less noticeable light brown hairs also appear on the legs and head. This species is characteristic of high altitude riparian woodland zones in European mountains. It is native to Central Europe, ranging from Spain to Ukraine, and is most commonly observed in the Alpine and Tatra mountain ranges, and in the Bohemian Massif.
