About Liparus dirus (J.F.W.Herbst, 1795)

Liparus dirus, described by J.F.W. Herbst in 1795, is a species of weevil that belongs to the family Curculionidae and subfamily Molytinae. This species is mainly found across Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and Spain. Both larvae and adult individuals of Liparus dirus feed on plant species in the Apiaceae family, most commonly feeding on Laserpitium latifolium, Laserpitium gallicum and Peucedanum cervaria. Adult beetles of this species reach a length of 17–19 millimetres, which equals 0.67–0.75 inches. Adults can most often be encountered between March and September. The entire body of this beetle is completely black. The surface of its elytra is covered in fine, dense punctures, and it does not have any coloured spots or stains.
