About Liocarcinus holsatus (Fabricius, 1798)
Liocarcinus holsatus (Fabricius, 1798), previously classified as Polybius holsatus and commonly called the flying crab, is a species of swimming crab. It is found mainly in the North Sea, Irish Sea, and English Channel. Its carapace can grow up to 4 centimetres (1.6 inches) wide, and is brownish-grey with a green tinge. It is very similar in appearance to the harbour crab Polybius depurator. The diet of this crab includes crustaceans (especially juvenile Crangon), molluscs such as Macoma balthica, and fish. This species sometimes acts as a host to the parasitic barnacle Sacculina.
