About Limonium californicum (Boiss.) A.Heller
Limonium californicum (Boiss.) A.Heller is a tough perennial herb that grows from a woody rhizome. It produces thick, leathery oval leaves that reach up to approximately 30 centimeters in length when including the petioles. These leaves are arranged in a basal rosette around the stem. The plant's inflorescence is a stiff, branching panicle that grows no taller than about 35 centimeters, and it bears large clusters of flowers. Each flower has brownish white ribbed sepals and petals that range in color from lavender to nearly white. This species is native to western North America, where its natural range extends from Oregon down to Baja California. Occasional sightings have also been recorded in Nevada and Arizona. It grows in coastal habitats including beaches, salt marshes, and coastal prairie, as well as other sandy saline and alkaline habitats such as playas.
