About Lima lima (Linnaeus, 1758)

The scientific name of this bivalve species is Lima lima (Linnaeus, 1758). Adult Lima lima have shells that measure 30–79 millimetres (1.2–3.1 inches) in length. The surface of their two valves bears 18–24 strong ribs, which are covered in small scales. These clams are filter feeders. This species occurs in the Mediterranean Sea, the Eastern Atlantic, and Caribbean waters, with its range extending from southern Florida to the West Indies and Bermuda. It inhabits rocky bottoms and coral, and is usually found in the seagrass meadows of Posidonia oceanica, at depths between 0 and 50 metres (160 ft).
