About Lilium michauxii Poir.
Lilium michauxii Poir., commonly known as the Carolina lily, can grow up to 3.5 ft (1.1 m) tall. It produces vibrant flowers that are 3–4 inches (76–102 mm) across. Its striking petals curve backward and are marked with dark purple spots, giving the plant a very distinctive look. Petal color ranges from yellow to red, and some flowers may show orange or purple shades. This species is unique as the only fragrant lily native east of the Rocky Mountains. Its leaves grow arranged in whorls along the stem, which is a characteristic feature of this plant. The Carolina lily is native to the southeastern United States, where it grows best in dry upland forests, sandy slopes, and ridges. Its native range covers southern Virginia, the Carolinas, the Florida Panhandle, and eastern Texas. This species is well-adapted to growing in nutrient-poor soils.
