About Lilium carniolicum Bernh. ex W.D.J.Koch
Lilium carniolicum, commonly known as the golden apple or Carniolan lily, is a flowering plant species belonging to the lily family Liliaceae. This lily is native to the Balkans, Austria, and the northeastern Italian regions of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The species takes its name from the historical region of Carniola, which covers parts of present-day Slovenia, the area where it is most abundant. The flowers of Lilium carniolicum range in color from red to yellow, with black speckles on their lower sections. Flower color can vary even between individual blooms growing in the same location. Overall, yellow is the most common color across the southern portion of the species' range. In this southern area, the group is sometimes divided into the closely related species Lilium bosniacum, Lilium albanicum, and Lilium jankae, but these taxa are most often treated as varieties of Lilium carniolicum instead.
