About Ligumia recta (Lamarck, 1819)

Ligumia recta, commonly known as the black sandshell, is a species of freshwater mussel. It is an aquatic bivalve mollusk that belongs to Unionidae, the family of river mussels. This species is native to eastern North America, where it occurs in the Mississippi River drainages, Great Lakes drainages, and some Gulf Coast drainages. Full-grown black sandshell mussels can reach up to 10 inches (25 cm) in length. Individuals have an elongate, quadrate body shape. Their shell is typically heavy, moderately thick, somewhat inflated, and cylindrical in form.
