About Leucothoe axillaris (Lam.) D.Don
Leucothoe axillaris, scientifically named Leucothoe axillaris (Lam.) D.Don, is a shrub with common names swamp dog-laurel and coastal dog-hobble. It is native to the southeastern United States, where it has been recorded growing in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. This species grows on floodplains in coastal regions at elevations below 200 m (660 ft). It is a branching shrub that reaches a maximum height of 2 m (7 ft). Its leaves grow up to 8 cm (3 in) long. The flowers of Leucothoe axillaris are white, cylindrical, and up to 8 mm (0.3 in) long. It produces fruit in the form of a dry capsule. The cultivar Scarletta = 'Zeblid' has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
